Well depends on the prices on
betfair. If the market is very very tight there will be no difference, but if the overround is a couple of percent it has to made on one player and there will be a difference. Also it depends if you are trying to lay at the current back price or the first available lay price. Example.....
The Ljubicic - Gimelsto match on
betfair
Ljubicic best price is 1.29 , available to lay at 1.30
Gimelsto best price is 4.30, available to lay at 4.40
Now that market is 100.8%, hence only a 0.8% overround so any difference will be slight but it will still be there. OK lets say you got £100 and you want to back Ljubicic. You can do this by either backing him or laying Gimelsto.
OK so stick £100 on at 1.29 and it should be pretty obvious your profit would be £29.
OK now lets try laying at 4.4 for a liability of £100.
Your backer stake would be £29.41
So by laying at 4.4 you would get an extra £0.41 rather than backing at 1.29
Ok doesn't sound like much but if you are dealing with large sums of cash it of course makes a difference. Plus doesn't matter how big or small you are backing, everyone wants a better price right ?
Also on a market with a larger overround the difference is much greater.
Example......
The Mirnyi-Blake market
Mirnyi best price 3.15, available to lay at 3.45
Blake best price 1.43, available to lay at 1.44
Now this is 101.7% , a slightly bigger overround.
OK so we want to back Mirnyi and have £100 to do so.
Stick £100 on at 3.15 and our profit would be £215
Lay blake at 1.44 for a liability of £100 and backer stake is £227.27
A difference of £12.27 ! !
That's quite a difference, and obviously you would want to lay at 1.44 rather than back at 3.15
If a market is very very close to 100% ie 100.3% it won't make much difference either way but if there is even a slight overround it has to be made somewhere. Here Mirnyi should be priced slightly higher than 3.15 to make the book closer to 100%
Similar thing happens in football too RC. Say you are laying the home team.
This is exactly the same as takin the away team on asian handicap at plus a half. Now it should be pretty obvious if you are saying laying the home team at evens yet you could take the away team +1/2 at 2.10 you should take the away team on asian handicap. The price on the asian will depend on how tight the bookie is with overround. Again I will get a plug in for my favourite bookie
pinnacle who does 1.97/1.97 style asians for the world cup and I think they do 1.98/1.98 style asians for the premiership.
There's also another scenario where you have the three results.
You wish to lay the home team and hence the home win. But would you be better off backing the draw and the away win rather than laying the home team ?
OK beefcake united are price at 2.20 and available to lay at 2.35
The draw is 4.20, the away win is 3.00
Ok so you can lay £100 at 2.35 or you can split your £100 between backing the draw and the away win. Which is better ?
