Re: Wimbledon 2005

Great previews runtcrab & beanie.

The bookies best price on Federer is now 8/13, and the Federer is very likely to prove unstoppable. I think picking up an injury is the only way the fed express can be derailed during wimbledon.

I can't see nadal challenging on grass, even if it the courts are playing slower again this year.

Mario Ancic should give you a run for your money again this year, I think he is a little overpriced at 28/1 with sportingodds. Ancic won the Ordina open today as well.

I will have a stab at malisse as a 150/1 outsider. Henman this year I don't even expect to make the quarters, and even if he does roddick will beat him easily.

I am surprised no one has previewed the womens, which is certainly a lot more open than the mens. (and more exciting to watch!)

I would say the winner will come from the following five for the womens:
(best current odds included)

Maria Sharapova 4
Justine Henin-Hardenne 4.3
Serena Williams 6
Kim Clijsters 6.7
Lindsay Davenport 13

I would favour Henin who has played fewer tournaments this year due to injuries, so has been saving herself for the big events. Sharapova may be under too much pressure as defending champion. Clijsters is only just coming back from injury, while Serena's form has been very patchy this year.

Davenport looks worthy of a bet at 12/1. I will put a bit on the french 17 year old Golovin - I got matched on betfair at 200/1 so I am hoping she can progress.

Re: Wimbledon 2005

Good stuff Tricky - I'm just deciding on my long term bets just now, and Ancic and Malisse will surely figure

Henman too will be well worth laying if he wins a round or two and Henmania :down kicks in. Like you say, I'd fancy Grosjean to take care of him before the quarters.

I'd left the womens alone as its enough work digesting all the info on the mens, but you make a good point in that it offers a better gambling prospect.

Was reading in the papers today all the reviews about the young players in the womens draws, including 15yr old Karatancheva(rreached QFs of the French) who has already pushed Sharapova to 3 sets and is on course to meet her in round two. Also, 17yr old Ivanovic(also reached QFs of French), and your fancy Tatiana Golovin, who could also meet Sharapova in the 4th round. One hell of an interesting draw.

Personally, I'd be a bit too concerned about Gasquet who is bang in form for the Nadal bet. Gasquet has a game beautifully suited to the fast grasscourt game, where Nadal's isnt, as he can't wear his opponents down by beating them around the court in strength sapping long rallies like he does on the clay.

Safin one is probably fair, as he will be favourite to from his section to get to last 16 but Phillipousis(who might go out to Beck) and Lopez are dangers.

That Max Mirnyi one though is about the best bet I've seen so far in this years Wimbledon. Canas has pulled out and Novak will hold no fears for the big lad.

Re: Wimbledon 2005

Just a few fancies then, some of which I'll be looking to lay off during the tournament:

Mens Outrights:

10pts Federer @ 1.66 - His quarter is as easy as he could have hoped for, so worst case scenario if he is below par he should still waltz into the semis, where he can be laid off if needs be. Should be his year again though.

3pts Ancic @ 30.00 - On great form having won in Nottingham, and has proved in the last few years he has what it takes to make good progress at Wimbledon. A showdown with Safin could be on the cards, at which point I might lay off the bet depending on how he's looked.

3pts Safin @ 30.00 - Likewise on good form after his showing at Halle. Could be one of the few potential threats to Federer, so I'll likely let this one ride.

1pt Grosjean @ 120.00 - A round 4 meeting with Henman looks likely, where the Frenchman has to be favoured, where his superb all round game should see off a below par Henman. It might then be time to lay the bet off if Roddick awaits.

2pts Gasquet @ 42 - On cracking form aswell this week at Queens and then Nottingham. Can beat Nadal and has every chance in his quarter.

1pt Malisse @ 170.00 - Should see off Marray first round, and has the ability to deal with a likely meeting with Coria in the 2nd. Ljubicic might be a step too far though.

1pt Stepanek @ 180.00 - Another with every chance in the 3rd quarter. Could be another thats gunning for Nadal.

1pt Ljubicic @ 250.00 - Huge odds for a player of his ability. Well worth a punt, even if he is in Roddick's portion.

1pt Mirnyi @ 270.00 - Bang on form, and has in previous years shown good Wimbledon form. No reason he cant go far.

All taken from Betfair so 5% comission to be taken into account.

Re: Wimbledon 2005

Womens draw:

4pts Williams @ 6.80 - Lightly practiced, but draw has been kind and will offer a chance to ease herself into the tournament. Very backable in her quarter.

2pts Davenport @ 15.00 - Best years perhaps now going behind her, but being first seed has given a good draw and out of practice Clijsters and Kusnetzsova will hold no fears in her quarter.

2pts Mauresmo @ 19.00 - Has the quality to see off Sprem and Likhotseva, and will compete with any player in the draw.

1pt Jankovic @ 80.00 - Every chance of going on to knock out 9th seed Myskina.

1pt Ivanovic @ 120.00 - Could find tough early ties against Henin-Hardenne and Peirce, but has an outside chance of taking both out, after which odds would plunge.

1pt Golovin @ 210.00 - Still young, but would fancy her chances against compatriot Dechy in what would be a superb match. In with a chance.

0.5pts Koukalova @ 260.00 - Another who could well run into Henin Hardenne in the 2nd round, but the Belgian will certainly be up against a big test against a player whose preparations have been spot on.

0.5pts Karatancheva @ 420.00 - Just 15, but thats nothing to be put off by. All set up for a meeting with Sharapova in the 2nd round, but she's run her close before. Girl with a huge name who could make a huge name for herself.

Already thinking of laying this one off - he's down at 21s on Betfair

Did anyone see Safin today that can give me an insight on how he played? Philipoussis was brilliant today, and I can see him beating Safin in the second round. Safin's questionable termperament in a long match might be more of a factor than Scud's fitness. And if the Aussie serves like he did today...

A day or two to consider it though :think

Re: Wimbledon 2005

first set and a half he looked like he could easily win the tournament, quietened down a little but thats probably because he was cruising in the match, u got a nice bet there

Re: Wimbledon 2005

Cheers for the info - gearing up for a cracking match then. With the potential of Roddick v Karlovic as well, there's plenty to like about the 2nd round draw

Re: Wimbledon 2005

I came in asking about Safin as an outright bet as i was incredibly impressed with him. He had a sluggish start in the first set but pulled himself together and coped quite well.

I can't remember the facts but his 1st serve percentage was pretty high. He also had more ace's than Rusedski which shows he is in form. His backhand returns were the killer for Rusedski - he had no answer to them.

Also was impressed with Nadal - i know he isn't a grass court player but he put in another display.

So im thinking of a little e/w bet on them 2 - anything that should scare me off?

Oh and also a little couple of points on Monifils at 800/1. Ive liked the look of this guy since he played and shouldve beat Roddick in France. The grass should suit him better aswell.
