Early Freeroll Strategy

I'm sorry if this is covered elsewhere but i realise that this tread title will be googled so i thought i would start a new thread to ask.

I was wondering what the best things to look out for during these Wild West style poker hands? folks are playing win or bust it would seem and it seems like bedlam to me.

I'm just scared that i could turn into one of these early round live hard die young players just to try and get a pot that will help me 'gazump' people as i try to collect a big pot.

Anyone any tips?

Re: Early Freeroll Strategy

Best tips for the start of a freeroll komp woul dbe to play really tight. You get loads of idiots who will just lob their chips in with anything and dont really care bcos its a freeroll etc. You can take advantage of this by only playing the very best of hands, and betting them hard when you get them. Just fold everything else. This should hold you good for at least the first hour.

Re: Early Freeroll Strategy

Sweet cheers Jezza i thought that. thats the bit i cant be doing with and i think if i can keep it steady and get through all that and not jump on their all-ins with things like A9s preflop i might be able to build on it. My 9th place was achieved by being extra catious at the start and just playing the good hands now i think about it Jezza.

I decided today that im gonna start putting something aside and try and just go for all the big feeder satellite thingies. I want to make every tournament a potential rollercoaster ride etc. once im sorted im gonna try play in 2 bigger tournaments as apposed to 4 or 5 smaller ones. There's folks that will turn me inside out as they know the game and i don't but i'm enjoyng comng up against them and trying to work out the way their doing things. I like looking back through the history and seeing who's been tight all game and what the winners betting patterns were like as i presume everyone must.

In my short 3 week career i see now that the best advice folks have gave me (Chris and others) is to just play the game. You can spend hours talking about it agterwards but you need to be out there and playing. As i say i see poker as a great excuse not to be doing anything behind the scenes at tdp at the mo but everyone is allowed a break. At least playing poker gets me out my bed and infront of the monitor.

yep Jezza is spot on Komp, patience is the key. Don't get tempted to mix it unless you have a top hand but even then it will go tits up sometimes.

Re: Early Freeroll Strategy

ive also just learnt if you dont have a pot to piss in you can chose how many hands between you and the next blind to go all in on. I think (nah its just taken some off me.

It's suprised me Coylo. I was it's biggest critic as anyone could tell you. I only got i..(moved to another table with 78 chips - i sat down at one earlier with $0.12 I wasnt shy. I won it all in and got to $0.66. The players with $5.00 started looking over their sholder at this new kid in town poker maverick.

Bloody hell. I wouldnt have thought i finished in this place. Thats the first time ive been in it. Just to think if i had not played so slack when i had enough pot to really clunk it up. I think i played half that game with about 8 times the pot. I lost it on a bad beat and a really stupid intuative chance.

Aye its good Coylo. I do it for the buzz i have to admit. It makes my fingers tingle.

Re: Early Freeroll Strategy

I did too Dan but truth be told i was just fighting for scraps from early on after ruining it for myself. I couldnt get comfortable and played it with a full bladder. I done an hour of commentry/karaoke/harmonica/guitar and realised that there's not alot i could do with the clip as it was a SWF file as ...well its a long story Dan.

Bah i've got nothing till midnight unless anyone knows of anything. Just post it on the freeroll thread to keep them all together. I need some action points but i refuse to get them till ive got a knowledge of who does what in the completely free freerolls game as it will be handy for complete beginners like Coylo and folks. Im just a few weeks down the line and im banging in a few placings. I'd be a fool to forget that there's also an element of luck to the game but i used to think it was all lucky till i got into it. It's actually all about trading chances and weighing things up etc. Quite differant to what i thought.

Re: Early Freeroll Strategy

I know it sounds corny Ed but i do really just like it for the rush and i do just want to try and keep it to big tournaments to maybe stike lucky one time so as i can do a Mr M and Jezza style write up on it all. I want to feel the rush of getting into a chance for a big tournament and failing on a hunch so as i can kick myself for ages about it and shake my head whenever i think about it

How many folks would have been in that Paradise freeroll tonight Ed?

Not at all corny komp, in fact I know exactly what you mean, stick with it and your time will come in a biggie, as far as I'm concerned as long as you always keep an open mind and want to learn then you'll do alright.
