Re: TASTY--- BE quick

I'd be weary of putting too high a stake on that mate. I bet on OGs in either the last world cup or the euros and there were some very VERY dodgy decisions made by the panel that sits to judge who they should be given to. Goals that were heading towards the corner flag before the keeper headed into his own net suddenly and had been credited as an og by all the TV companies and the BBC were suddenly given to the midfielder who pundted the ball hopefully from the halfway line.

Having said that I think the buy price on the spread is 4 so it's definitely a better bet than that I reckon.

Re: TASTY--- BE quick

BERLIN (Reuters) - FIFA will be using computer technology to clarify whether a goal is an own goal or not for the first time when the World Cup starts on Friday.

Holger Osieck, the head of FIFA's technical study group, told reporters on Thursday that for the first time all 13 members would see detailed technical images of any dubious goals downloaded to their laptops.

A verdict from the group would then be made as soon as possible.

"Previous tournaments have been dotted with decisions about what constitutes an own goal which appeared to lack clear guidelines," he told a news conference.

"On the basis of fairness and positive approach the benefit of the doubt should always be given to the attacker."

Andy Roxburgh, UEFA's technical director and a member of the FIFA technical group added: "No matter where a member is in Germany, he will get images of the goal on his laptop and the decision will be made by the whole group as soon as possible.

"If a goal has been awarded wrongly, the decision will be rectified by the next day at the latest."

FIFA clarified new regulations on own goals in 1997 and Roxburgh added: "There are three clear guidelines on what constitutes an own goal -- or who should be credited as the official goalscorer.

"If a goal-bound shot accidentally bounces off a team mate into the opponent's goal, the goal will be awarded to the player who struck the ball toward the target in the first place.

"If a goal bound shot is intentionally re-directed into an opponent's net, the goal will be credited to the player whose action produced the change of direction.

"If a shot is going wide and is then deflected or re-directed into the opponent's goal by a team mate or an opponent then this player will be credited with the goal.

"So if it just brushes your team mate's leg and goes in, or hits an opponent and goes in, the player attempting to score is credited with the goal. If it obviously has changed direction, then it is either an own goal, or your team mates."

Own goals are rare in the World Cup; there have only been 24 in the 644 matches played in the finals since 1930.

The most infamous and ultimately tragic own goal was scored by Andres Escobar of Colombia against the United States in 1994.

He was murdered when he returned home a few days later after gamblers in Colombia blamed him for their heavy losses following Colombia's 2-1 defeat in the match.

As well as deciding on goal-scorers, the study group, established in 1966, will also be observing new trends and innovations in the game and nominating the players for the various FIFA Awards made at the end of the tournament including the All-Star team, the 64 Man of the Match awards and the Young Player of the tournament.

Re: TASTY--- BE quick

The stats don't seem to back up the possibility of 5 or more - just 24 own goals in the 644 World Cup games played since 1930... from http://uk.news.yahoo.com/08062006/80...l-dilemma.html

'CLEAR GUIDELINES'

It also compiles the list of outstanding players from which journalists choose the Golden Ball winner for Player of the Tournament.

Re: TASTY--- BE quick

Feel free to delete my post RC! A nice co-incidence.

From the info any shots that from a replay look like they were going to go in anyway will be credited to the attacker. The 13/15 for under 3.5 OG's could be a good bet at Expect based on this and the low numbers of OG's in WC history.

Re: TASTY--- BE quick

Spooky

On the subject of own goals, China's yesterday against France has to go down as one of the best I've seen. A superb volley from just inside his own area with his back to goal that sliced off the outside of his foot and looped past the keeper and into the top corner. He could try to repeat that 1000 times and he'd not come close to doing it again

No no no gents you've got it all wrong.

I've watched these clowns lose me money for the last two competitions and these guidelines make own goals more likely, not less.

This

..is the sort of bollox that they've been crediting to the attacking player and had me pulling my fucking hair out. If it wasn't going in before it was deflected, how the fuck can they give it to the keeper- I cry. But they have done and now, it seems, they're not going to.

Having said that, if it's like all the other FIFA edicts before major competitions it'll last a week and then revert to type.

Under 3.5 for OG's a bad bet AMP. Even worse when you consider the uproar against the new balls which move about more than they ever have. The chances of "wides" being deflected in by a defender are even more likely than before.

Re: TASTY--- BE quick

yeah, I didn't think of it along those lines ODM. I odn't agree with Keepers being award O.G's against. Even if a striker hits it and it hits the bar and keeper's head and then goes in.

I'm not actually going to bet on it as I'm not doing any tournament long bets as I wasnt to turn my WC bank over a few times (providing they don't all go down over the weekend..).

And it seems like players have been complianing about new balls every year now...
