Libertad seeking perfect start in Copa Libertadores
SAO PAULO, Brazil: Paraguay's Libertad plays at Ecuador's El Nacional on Tuesday looking to become the first team to win three straight matches in this year's Copa Libertadores.

Libertad got off to a promising start beating Argentina's Banfield 1-0 at home then shocking Mexico's America 4-1 in Mexico. A victory in Quito on Tuesday can virtually secure the Paraguayans a spot in the second round of Latin America's top club competition.

Libertad has six points in Group 1, three points more than Banfield and America, which play on Wednesday in Mexico. Winless El Nacional has zero points. The top two clubs from each of the eight groups advance to the second round.

Among the competition's 32 teams, only Mexico's Necaxa and Brazil's Parana and Santos have won their first two matches. None of them play this week, however.

Libertad twice reached the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores, in 2000 and last year, when it was eliminated 2-0 on aggregate by eventual champion Internacional of Brazil. Libertad is playing in the competition for the seventh time.

The Paraguayans will face the high altitude of Quito on Tuesday, but remain slightly favored taking into consideration that El Nacional has lost three consecutive matches and is next to last in its national league.

There were five more Copa Libertadores matches this week.

Argentina's River Plate — a two-time champion — hosts Venezuela's Caracas on Thursday, with the winner taking sole possession of first place in Group 6. River Plate debuted with a 2-1 win over Chile's Colo Colo, while Caracas got past Ecuador's Liga de Quito 1-0.

River Plate and Caracas have three points each, while Colo Colo and Liga de Quito — which meet on Wednesday in Ecuador — have zero.

River Plate's Argentine rival Gimnasia y Esgrima will host Bolivia's Deportivo Pasto on Tuesday in La Plata, hoping to rebound from a 3-0 loss to Uruguay's Defensor Sporting in its Group 8 opener in Uruguay.

Santos leads the group with six points, followed by Defensor Sporting with three. Gimnasia and Deportivo have zero points from one match each.

Peru's Cienciano hosts Bolivia's Bolivar on Thursday looking to inch closer to the lead in Group 7.

Bolivar and Argentina's Boca Juniors have four points each from two matches, while winless Cienciano and Mexico's Toluca are yet to earn points.

In Group 3, Colombia's Deportes Tolima hosts Paraguay's Cerro Porteno on Wednesday.

Brazil's Gremio leads the group with four points, two more than Cucuta Deportivo and three more than Deportes Tolima. Cerro Porteno has zero points.

Defending champion Internacional, which is third in Group 4 with three points from two matches, won't play until March 14 against Argentina's Velez Sarfield in Buenos Aires. Velez leads the group along with Uruguay's Nacional with four points each. Ecuador's Emelec has zero.

River's injury problems mount before Caracas game
RIO DE JANEIRO, March 5 (Reuters) - River Plate coach Daniel Passarella could find himself with only two available forwards for their Libertadores Cup tie at home to Caracas FC because of mounting injury worries.
The two sides both won their opening outings and will be battling for the Group Six leadership at the River Plate stadium on Thursday.
Colombian forward Radamel Falcao Garcia, sent off in the 2-1 win away to Colo Colo, is suspended while his strike partner Ernesto Farias is doubtful with a back injury.
Striker Mauro Rosales, signed from Ajax Amsterdam, is expected to join the club on Wednesday but is unlikely to be ready for the match while Ariel Ortega was due to resume training on Monday after a two-month absence for personal reasons.
That could leave only Marco Ruben and 17-year-old Andres Rios, who made his debut in the 2-1 defeat by Argentinos Juniors on Sunday, available to play in attack.
Caracas, whose team includes several Venezuelan internationals and a Colombian strikeforce of Wilson Carpintero and Ivan Velasquez, began with a 1-0 win over Ecuador's LDU and have no injury or suspension worries.
LDU host Colo Colo in Quito on Wednesday as the two sides attempt to pick up their first points.
FLYING VISIT
Paraguayan champions Libertad will make a flying visit to Quito to face Ecuadorean army side El Nacional as they attempt to capitalise on their excellent start in Group One.
Libertad, semi-finalists last year, have six points from their opening two games after their 4-1 win away to Mexico's America last Thursday.
El Nacional, on the other hand, lost by the same score in Argentina against Banfield last week and were also beaten at home by America in their first game.
Libertad will stay in Guayaquil at sea level on the eve of Tuesday's match, flying into high altitude Quito hours before kick off. They will then fly out again immediately after the final whistle.
America have a chance to bounce back from the Libertad defeat when they host Banfield on Wednesday at the Azteca stadium, although Sunday's 1-0 league defeat to Pachuca will not have done their confidence any good.
"The team is united. We're still okay in the (Mexican) standings and we will qualify in the Libertadores, so I don't consider this to be a crisis," said vice-president Pedro Portillo.
Argentina's Gimnasia-La Plata and Colombia's Deportivo Pasto will also be playing for their first points when they meet in Group Eight on Tuesday.

National goes for first triumph in Libertadores
Quito.
National will face Paraguayan Libertad Asuncion in Olímpico Atahualpa, with the mind put in obtaining his first victory in this Copa libertadores.The "Militares" need to win in this game since they lost first two games in the group, the first one at home from America and second to the Banfield like visitor.

However, Libertad Asuncion counts to its favor with the triumph that obtained before America in the height of Mexico, reason why the “Guaraníes” trusts that in Quito also they will be able to face height and to remove a positive result.

Recovered after a loose on the beginning of the Copa Libertadores, Argentine Banfield traveled today to Mexico to face America, in the game corresponding to group 1 of the continental competition.

Banfield lost in its debut against the Paraguayan Libertad , but last week corrected its course in its stage when winning to the Ecuadorian National (4-1).In that encounter the Uruguayan forward Josemir Lujambio injured itself -the left knee, and he will be out for the game against the Mexicans.

Pasto will look for his first victory in Libertadores against Gimnasia La Plata.

Argentine Gimnasia La Plata and Colombian Deportivo Pasto will face today in search of his first victory in Copa Libertadores in group 8 after their defeats from Uruguayan-Defensor Sporting and Brazilian-Santos.Local team will appear in the playground with majority of substitute players because his trainer, Pedro Troglio, has reserved the starters for the Clausura ,among them the Uruguayan forward Santiago Silva and the Chilean midfield player Alvaro Ormeño. Gimnasia with two victories, a tie and a defeat in Clausura,tries to surpass the crisis that lived in 2006 and which it moved to the thirteenth position in the Apertura when they lost 10 of the 19 gamesof the calendar.

Madureira hold on to slender lead
Midfielder Maicon scored a second-half winner as 10-man Madureira upset Flamengo 1-0 in the first leg of the Guanabara Cup final on Sunday.

Maicon scored the only goal with a powerful left-footer from outside the area in the 72nd minute.

In a heated match Madureira had gone a man down in the 46th minute after striker Marcelo was sent off for simulating a foul. Flamengo had a player ejected in the 73rd after defender Moises got into an altercation with a Madureira striker.

It was Madureira's third consecutive win over Flamengo, which is yet to beat the opponent in more than two years.

River faces Caracas in search of second victory

In their presentation,"los millonarios"dominated against Colo Colo in Chile.
River Plate will today receive Caracas, of Venezuela, in a game between two teams that won in their first games in group 6 , in encounter that will be disputed in "Monumental".
