Re: Aussie State League Soccer: 19th May

Two things - bwin are offering odds on Fridays Foxtel cup games and will offer Saturdays Foxtel Cup, Best League and NSW Premier Leagues on friday as a minimum.
Secondly the bookies are being very reluctant to offer odds until previews and info from down under reach them late in the week - some are complaining about losing money over the past couple of seasons because punters have been given more relevant info and analysis AFTER they have layed their odds. We may see some odds appearing on Friday.

Moving on to the weekend and below are a few pointers for the WA and TAS games. Hopefully I will have a VIC summary put together in the next few hours.

West Australia Premier

Clash of the titans on Saturday sees league leaders, only on goal difference, and five times champions in the past seven years Perth SC travel the short distance to the Litis Stadium to face Floreat Athena, currently second in the table, and both sides having unbeaten records after five games. Perth coach Graham Normanton has an immensely talented squad at his disposal and, not surprisingly, competition for places in the starting line-up is red-hot. "We've got an excellent group of players this year and team spirit is great," said striker Barry Wood. "Everyone is feeling good about the season ahead. We took our foot off the pedal a little in the first two games but have really driven it home with some big scores against Swan I.C. and Sorrento. There's still room for improvement and every player is aware that if they don't perform there's someone waiting to take their place."
Nikita Rukavytsya has been in sensational goal-scoring form for Perth, nine goals in five games, and will be sorely missed when he takes up his new post with Perth Glory in the not too distant future. "Nik has been great for us," commented Wood. "Scoring goals is what he'll be measured on and he has the potential to be a fantastic player for Glory. He's quick and agile and will be difficult for any defence to handle.”
The season’s first piece of silverware, the pre season night series, is already in the trophy cabinet at Dorrien Gardens and on their way to the final Perth beat Floreat 2:0 in the semi’s, a game in which both sides were at full strength and Saturdays clash will be virtually a carbon copy of that evening back in March.
Floreat enter the game coming off a 4-1 away win over struggling Inglewood and coach Michael Roki will rely on lively striker Boima Karpeh and young partner Stefan Smiljanic along with Josip Magdic to cause problems for the water-tight Perth defence that has conceded just one goal in the league season. Last couple of seasons have been honours even but Perth this season look to just have the edge to take the points and a clear lead in the title race. The kick off is now 17:30 (Local) so we will have little longer to await the outcome.
fficeffice" />
Cockburn City, unbeaten at home this season, face third placed Stirling Lions at Dalmatinac Park. City, still smarting after losing to Perth last week in a tight contest, will be looking to retain that unbeaten record whilst the Lions, on a high after thrashing bottom club Sorrento 4:0 thanks mainly to two goals from teenage whiz kid Ludovic Boi, will be all-out to spoil it. Stirling have a much better defence and must be favourites to take the points and consolidate third place. Speaking of Sorrento the Gulls have a tough home game against newly promoted Fremantle Spirit who travel north to Percy Doyle Reserve. The reigning champions are having a dreadful season so far, mainly due to losing some key players from the championship winning side over the summer, and the key man here maybe the ex Perth Glory midfield/striker Todd Harnwell who could well inspire the side to its first victory.

Bobby Despotovski’s Inglewood United are at home to ECU Joondalup and with the two sides drawing this fixture in the past two seasons and being so close on current form a third draw seems the most likely result. At the basement of the table Swan IC host Wanneroo City at the Italian Club and should run out winners while Western Knights look far too strong for Armadale seeking their first win of the season but probably wont achieve at Nash Field – they have also lost there the previous two seasons.

West Australia First Division

Leaders Dianella White Eagles are away to Balcatta on Saturday which is a fixture they wont be treating lightly, when these two met last September the home side ran out 3:0 winners. The Eagles are flying high this season after finishing in a low position in 2006 and are unbeaten so far with good winning margins (last weekend they thrashed Forrestfield 5:1) and look strong favourites to win at Graham Burkett Reserve with Balcatta still having a few injury worries from last weekend’s encounter with Ashfield. The tie of the round is at Peelwood Park where third placed Mandurah City entertain second spotted Canning City in what looks to be a cracking match. Mandurah slipped up last weekend at home to Bayswater after taking the lead with five minutes gone they seemed to fall asleep and were mediocre for the rest of the match allowing Bayswater to slip in two goals and take the points. They wont make the same error on Saturday.
In the other games newly promoted from the Amateur Premier Division Queens Park look set to rack up their fifth defeat of the season at home to Gosnells City who suffered a 3:0 defeat last week and will be without Alex Claxton after his sending off in that game. At Hartfield Park Forrestfield United who have conceded eleven goals in their last two games will find visitors Morley-Windmills too strong for them while South West Phoenix should ensure Rockingham City’s miserable start to the season continues. Finally the Bayswater City against Ashfield game looks, on current form, to be a win for the visitors to Frank Drago Reserve but home advantage may well see them share the points come 4:45 on Saturday evening.

Tasmania North Premier

Match of the round is Burnie United, second in the table, against leaders Devonport City at Montello. The Strikers are flying high this season, after finishing only seventh in 2006, and have opened their account with 22 goals in just five matches including 15 away goals! Chris McKenna and Peter Gilham have scored 15 goals between them so far and coach Tom McGinn is extremely pleased with his teams start to the season and, in particular, their 5:0 drubbing of reigning champions Somerset a month ago. Burnie, on the other hand, are no slouches either losing only to Olympic by a narrow margin after having a man sent off. Jeremy De Bomford has emerged over the past few games as a match winning striker for Burnie. On balance Burnie should take advantage of home soil but it will be a close encounter.
Elsewhere bottom club Launceston take on the renamed Prospect Knights at Birch Avenue and they will be hoping for a slightly better ride than their previous three home games this season. The Knights are rebounding after losing their first three games and should take the points on Saturday.
Reigning champions Somerset Sharks travel to Northern Rangers where they have won only once at the NTCA in the past five years but on Saturday they should take the three points home with them as Rangers are still recovering from three successive defeats including one by lowly Ulverstone.
Ulverstone are playing their fifth away game out of six matches this Saturday against Riverside Olympic at Windsor Park where they have not won in the past six seasons and, on current form, this weekend will be no different.

Tasmania South Premier

Hobart Olympic receive University to the Athletic Centre where the students have won four and drawn one in the past six encounters with Julian Proud and Mark Rapley, back from injury, forming a striking up front partnership which has produced nine goals for them so far this season. Rumour is that Uni will be still without injured midfield organiser Colin Shepherd for a second consecutive week which will be a big blow to them. Olympic started with three wins but have in the past month seen a decline in performance which may well be continued on Saturday.
The big game is at third placed South Hobart where the visitors are second placed Clarence United. Clarence, under coach and skipper Andrew Browne, have done a great job this season after a mid table finish in 2006. South’s have lost all their three home games so far whilst Clarence are unbeaten either home or away but South’s coach, Steve Adkins, is looking forward to the encounter after winning a difficult match last weekend against the Eagles. David Cooper is the man in form here and he could well make the difference and put the phoenix (Clarence) to rest.

Re: Aussie State League Soccer: 19th May

Some further thoughts

Victoria Division One

Top game here on Saturday is big derby clash between Casey (formerly Cranbourne) Comets and Langwarrin at Comets Stadium in what should be a close and entertaining clash. These two have not met for three years when Langy ran out 3:0 winners but things have moved on since then and Langwarrin have had a few ups and downs in their first four games under coach Gus Macleod but this is a greatly revamped side from the one that finished third in 2006. They have only scored twice this year, both by Thomas Madhazai, and rely heavily on attacking central midfield man Ben Caffrey to make the chances. Casey too have had a mixed start but last time out at home impressed with a convincing 4:2 win over Brunswick City with Anthony Ciccarelli and Filkret Korkaric both scoring a brace and excellent midfield support from Benny Watson. Of the two Casey are the most inconsistent but home advantage in this local derby will be a factor. A sharing of the spoils seem most likely.
Relegated Frankston Pines take on Bentleigh Greens at Monterrey Reserve in a third versus fourth clash. The Pines have won their last three games including thrashing Westgate 3:0 away, a feat not emulated by the Greens who could only draw 0:0 at home to Westgate. With a poor scoring record Bentleigh will be struggling and Frankston could be well on their way to bouncing back to the Premier League.
Finally North Geelong look favourites to beat Westgate in the Croat versus Serb clash at Elcho Park. These are always tight affairs and both teams are low scorers so far but this fixture has a habit of producing goals – fifteen in the last three encounters – so expect some good free flowing football and the Warriors to win but only just.

Hope Ladbrokes have found the loo roll!

Had a word with a guy from Hills and they're gonna be offering odds from next weekend. That probably means they'll be setting their prices on the Wednesdays of the weekends before the games.

Re: Aussie State League Soccer: 19th May

Final thoughts for Saturday
Victoria Division Two

League leaders Keilor Park should have no trouble at home to Altona East Phoenix who are struggling to find their way since relegation at the end of 2006 whilst the match of the round sees second play third at JT Gray Reserve where Williamstown host Pascoe Vale in a match which is usually tight and short on goals – only eight in the past four meetings. Both sides seem a little jittery with Williamstown still reeling from losing 3:0 last weekend to lowly Maribyrnong and this match would appear to be set fair for a draw, possibly with no goals.
In the mid table Werribee City take on Sunbury United at Galvin Park in another tie which is always close and just one goal often separates the sides. The Bees have already three draws to their name so far and another on Saturday seems likely.
fficeffice" />
Victoria Division Three
Only four games on the pools as Doncaster play Friday evenings and North Caulfield play on Sundays with three of them appearing as solid home wins but the fourth, South Springvale against Northcote City down at Warner Reserve, looks, on paper anyway, to fairly evenly matched.

Victoria Division Four
Cairnlea, still playing at Green Gully after the local Cairnlea council has objected to their proposed move to a new permanent home at Cairnlea Park, are unbeaten so far whilst Ballarat Red Devils, having had a lick of paint from new sponsors Haymes, are riding high after their 7:0 win over bottom side Plenty Valley last Saturday evening. On balance the home side should do the business and we should also expect wins for Geelong, Geelong Rangers, Banuyle City and Avondale Heights. The basement clash at Keilor Lodge Reserve should be close with visitors Corio, desperate for their first win this season after missing promotion last year, taking on home side Sydenham Park in a game which the spoils may end up been shared equally.

Victoria Division Five
Newly promoted Doveton top the table and will still be there come Saturday evening as the face bottom side Fitzroy City, whilst expect wins also for Mooroolbark, Nunawading City, Frankston Strikers and Southern Suburbs. Expect a draw between Berwick City and Endeavour United where the pitch at Jack Thomas Reserve is not in good condition due to the drought and the City players have not been able to train on it which should negate the home advantage.

Victoria Division Six
Wins for Laverton Park, Melbourne City, Hume United and South Yarra look on the cards based on current performances but the other two games could be much closer and produce draws. North Sunshine Eagles, following relegation, are flying high right now and are facing third placed Glenroy while the other Eagles, Western, are at home at Larissa Reserve to Darebin United.
