Quote:
Boca Juniors, Santos on the brink of elimination in Copa Libertadores

SAO PAULO, Brazil: South American powerhouses Boca Juniors and Santos need to rebound from disappointing first-leg results to avoid being upset in the Copa Libertadores semifinals this week.

Two-time champion Santos lost its first leg to Brazilian rival Gremio 2-0 last week in Porto Alegre, while five-time champion Boca Juniors of Argentina fell 3-1 to surprising Cucuta Deportivo in Colombia.

Santos, seeking its first Libertadores title since 1963, will need to score at least two goals at its Vila Belmiro stadium on Wednesday to keep alive its chances of reaching the finals for the first time since 2003, when it lost the title to Boca.

Santos dominated the first stage of the traditional club tournament and was unbeaten until last week's defeat to Gremio, which won the competition in 1983 and 1995 but hasn't reached the finals since. Santos entered the semifinals as the favorite against Gremio, which barely advanced from the group stage and won only six of its 11 matches.

But Gremio dominated the first leg, taking the lead on first-half goals by captain Tcheco and striker Carlos Eduardo and cruising to victory.

Santos remains optimistic, however.

"I'm certain we can achieve the result we need," Santos coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo said. "We came back from other similar deficits, like in the Sao Paulo state championship final, and I know we can do it again."

Santos won the traditional state championship against Sao Caetano earlier this year after losing the first leg 2-0. It won the return match by the same score, clinching the championship because it had the tournament's best record.

In the Copa Libertadores, Santos fell behind twice and came back.

It was losing 2-0 at home to Venezuela's Caracas in the second round, but rebounded to win 3-2 and advance 5-4 on aggregate. In the quarterfinals, it was down 1-0 to Mexico's America in the return match following a scoreless first leg, but recovered to win 2-1 and reach the semifinals.

In the other semifinal, Boca Juniors also was favored to cruise past Cucuta Deportivo, but it will have to rebound from the same two-goal deficit as Santos if it wants to reach its fifth final in seven years.

Boca Juniors led 1-0 in Colombia, but allowed Cucuta — playing in its first Copa Libertadores — to rally with three unanswered goals.

Because of the away goal, the Argentine club — which has won the Latin American competition three of its last four trips to the finals — can advance with a 2-0 victory in Buenos Aires on Thursday.

Boca Juniors could be just the latest victim of Cucurta, which graduated from the Colombian second division only two years ago and has surprised several top clubs in this year's competition, including Paraguay's Cerro Porteno, Mexico's Toluca and Uruguay's Nacional.

Re: Copa Libertadores & SA 6/7 Jun

Santos-Gremio
Santos should win tonight but I’m not sure if that`s going to be enough for the final....
I `m going with over on this game...
Santos played 4/5 games at home over2.5 ,Gremio is typical under team ,just one over game in 10 played games in Libertadores this year but I hope that Santos is going to attack from first minute and i think Gremio is going to score too ,so both teams to score is good bet too , should be good game for watching

Santos: Fabio Costa - Alessandro, Adaílton, Avalos, Kléber - Claudio Maldonado, Cleber Santana, Zé Roberto - Jonas, Moraes y Marcos Aurélio.
DT: Vanderlei Luxemburgo.

Gremio: Sebastián Saja - Patricio, William, Teco, Lúcio - Sandro Goiano, Gavilán, Lucas (Diego Souza), Tcheco (Ramón) - Carlos Eduardo y Tuta (Amoroso).
DT: Mano Menezes.

H2H:
Santos Gremio 1:0 08.10.2006
Santos Gremio 5:1 05.12.2004
Santos Gremio 2:2 07.12.2003
Santos Gremio 3:0 01.12.2002
Santos Gremio 2:0 14.09.2002
Santos Gremio 4:2 04.11.2001

Re: Copa Libertadores & SA 6/7 Jun

Santos v Gremio
I took a small bet on Grêmio to be the CTL outright winner @ 6.5 it is now 2.75. i did it just based on the weird statistic that they win it every 12 years. but now the bookies seem to feel theyre favorites.

Tonight its definitly going to be a battle between the Paulista Santos and the Gaucho Grêmio.

Grêmio likes a battle, they relegated to 2nd Div. in 2004 after finishing last in the league.
In 2005 they won the 2nd Div. championship after having four players sent off and two penalty kicks against them that werent scored and they beat Náutico 1-0. That match is now called as "The Battle of Aflitos".

Santos on the other hand has every reason to believe they can turn this around.

In 58 h2h encounters, Santos won 27 and lost only 14.

If at their home stadium Grêmio is unbeaten, of the 15 times theyve traveled Grêmio won only five, lost eight, four of the defeats had been by two or more goals.

Of 18 home games that Santos played this year it won 13, drew three and only lost two.

In these 18 games in its stadium this year, Santos only failed to score in one, against Are Bento.

In 40 games so far this year, Santos won 12 times by a two goal difference.

In the first leg, Grêmio had only two shots on goal.
A team with players like Zé Robert, Kléber, Cléber Santana, behind Marcos Aurélio, cannot play so bad twice in a row.

Fábio Costa, Kléber, Zé Robert are more experienced than Grêmio's players.

Santos allready overturned a goal deficit in the Liberators, V Caracas-VEN and America-MEX.

Finally Luxemburgo is a master in motivating players and setting winning projects. It again faces Manu Menezes, who's still at the beggining of his career.

The battle
The battle began after Santos fans were beaten by locals on their return trip, appearantly this was in cooperation with the local police.
That and the lose to Grêmio, made a local radio broadcaster outburst, talking to Santos fans on a private station, saying some nasty words like outlaws and "Bichonas" (think i know what he meant).

The broadcaster later apologized, but Grêmio will definitly look to exploit on his words as a motivational tool.

Further more, theres the matter of the amount of tickets offered to Grêmio, only 400 of the 1000 tickets are available..

Re: Copa Libertadores & SA 6/7 Jun

Boca Juniors - Cucuta

Boca probable is going to win but i fancy goals in this game too, they have to attack becouse they have to score at least two goals but i doubt that it would be just 2 goals today, at least four is on my mind
Cucuta in the first game score three and from what i so they have decent attack but away from home they are difrent team ...

Boca Juniors: Mauricio Caranta, Hugo Ibarra, Claudio Morel, Clemente Rodríguez, Pablo Ledesma, Ever Banega, Nery Cardozo, Juan Román Riquelme, Rodrigo Palacio y Martín Palermo. Entrenador: Miguel Russo.

Cúcuta Deportivo: Robinson Zapata, Rubén Bustos, Julián Hurtado, Walter Moreno, Elvis González, Dumar Rueda, Charles Castro, Alex Del Castillo, Madbelly Torres, Lionard Pajoy y Juan Manuel Martínez. Entrenador: Jorge Luis Bernal.

Arbitro: Roberto Silvera (URU)

Over3,5 @2.60....4pts
Over4,5@4.50...2 pts
