Re: Setanta Cup 14th April
I think that following on from a few months ago tomorrow night the two eircom league sides should once again be too strong for their northern counterparts.
Cork won their last 2 games in a row while Cliftonville have been in freefall the past few weeks, theyve been terrible and have blown all chances they've had of winning the league.
Dungannon as well have had a miserable season in the league and sit 10th in the league. They play the current holders Drogheda who are also on the back of 2 wins. Drogheda are a much much better side than Dungannon who are out of their depth in the competition.
i fancy a Drogheda/Cork double, what do the rest of you think?

Re: Setanta Cup 14th April
cheers cinny. as soon as i saw Linfield i thought 'sod it i'll leave that to the brit football crew' this is an inter irish trophy isnt it?
Quote:
The Setanta Sports Cup, commonly known as the Setanta Cup, is a club football competition featuring teams from both football associations on the island of Ireland. It was inaugurated in 2005 as a cross-border competition between clubs from the FAI League of Ireland from the Republic of Ireland and the Irish League from Northern Ireland.
The cup is sponsored by Setanta Sports, the Irish sports television network. The competition was launched with Setanta providing support for prize money (€350,000) and sponsorship (€1.6 million over 4 years).
The competition features 4 teams from each league with the winners and runners-up of the respective leagues, the winners of the respective major cup competitions, FAI Cup, and Irish Cup, and the winners of the respective secondary cup competitions, the eircom League Cup and Irish Football League Cup being added. If a club has qualified via a cup win and would also qualify by league table position, one of the spots would be awarded to the next highest club in the league table that has not qualified via a cup win. However, this was ignored in Setanta's awarding of Shelbourne's spot in the 2007 competition to St. Patrick's Athletic, when, in fact, going by the rules of entry, it should have been awarded to Sligo Rovers. The competition is organised with two groups of four teams, semi-finals and a final.

aww don't ask Cinny as i would then have to tell you. I suppose ive been off exploring myself whilst The Daily Punt does the same. I think we all might be better for it. Onwards and upwards. I wont give up if you all dont.
Is that the league so far? Bloody great i thought it was knock out (nah it was champion mate) 2 groups too. How long does this go on for? i better go read
Tuesday 26 February Drogheda United 3-2 Cliftonville
Tuesday 26 February Dungannon Swifts 0-2 Cork City
Monday 10 March Linfield 3-1 Derry City
Monday 10 March St. Patrick's Athletic 3-3 Glentoran
Tuesday 18 March Cork City 0-0 Drogheda United
Tuesday 18 March Cliftonville 0-0 Dungannon Swifts
Monday 7 April Glentoran 1-3 Linfield
Monday 7 April Derry City 2-0 St. Patrick's Athletic
Irish Football Association, Northern Ireland - Setanta Cup
sounds an interesting trophy all in and i will look in with interest. Im actually getting all feverent (??) here. Im salivating (??) infact Drogheda loking for their 3rd setanta cup success in a row. Who will stop them? Looked solid enough so far. aye a great tournie by the looks of things. Interesting to see this team v that team. It's like when an english side meets a scottish side in europe or even in a preseason friendly. the surrealness of it all. dont you think? (same feeling as seeing your school teacher out of school when you were very young or your grandads being in the same house at christmas)

Re: Setanta Cup 14th April
Drogheda best priced 1.73 at bet365 (from 1.8) as low as 1.57 in places. Here i could be interested in this. I'll go read up the thread a bit. I like bet365 being the best price as its where all my money is.
cork's 1.44 with Bet365 though. Best priced 1.53 in places

Re: Setanta Cup 14th April
news from rte
Cork City v Cliftonville
Cork City and Cliftonville come face to face in tonight's Setanta Sports Cup clash at Turner's Cross, kick-off 7.45pm.
It is the first ever fixture to be played between the two clubs and the Reds will be desperate for a maiden victory in the tournament with only one point from their opening two games.
Pat Sullivan is once again available as his two-match ban applies only to league matches, while Billy Woods will miss out as he is still recovering from an ankle injury.
Liam Kearney was substituted after suffering severe bruising to his arm in the win over Galway United and is doubtful for the clash, but boss Alan Mathews will be hoping that the winger, who has been in fine form this season, will be available for the clash.
Mathews said that he is looking forward to the game and is hoping that his side can continue their recent good form: 'This is obviously the first meeting between the two clubs, and we are looking forward to welcoming Cliftonville to Cork for what promises to be an interesting game.
'We had a good win in Galway on Friday night and that's two wins on the spin for us, so we will be aiming to keep that run going on Monday night.'
Cliftonville travel with a full squad after Friday night's clash with Crusaders was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
The Reds have already secured a spot in next season's tournament after securing third place in the Carnegie Irish League.
Dungannon Swifts v Drogheda United
Dungannon Swifts and Drogheda United meet in tonight's Setanta Cup clash at Stangmore Park, kick-off 8.05pm.
Influential defender Johnny Montgomery is a major doubt for Swifts. He has been struggling with an eye problem and had to be substituted after 34 minutes of Saturday's defeat to Institute.
Darren Murphy should return after not being risked against 'Stute.
Mark McAllister is free from suspension, while Aidan McCarron also comes into contention.
Drogheda boss Paul Doolin has a couple of injury worries as Finnish goalkeeper Mikko Vilmunen is more than likely out with a chest infection, while both Jason Gavin and Stuart Byrne picked up knocks during Friday night's victory over UCD.
Doolin said: 'Stuart took a few knocks on the same ankle, he's picked up a few of them recently, and Jason took a bang on his hip.
'Mikko was struggling with a chest infection, but Jamie (Ewings) did well when he came in against UCD.'

Re: 14 Apr: Setanta Cup
In the local back in newry frank hughes, he's giving a massive 5/6 on drogheda!
For me im going to back the Drogheda/Cork double its the only option, two sides who won their last 2 games playing teams out of form. Cliftonville and Dungannon have been terrible in recent weeks. Both also lost to eircom league opposition in their first round of fixtures. Id advise to get on the double, its what ill be doing. May pay out around 6/4.

Re: 14 Apr: Setanta Cup
Hopefully Drogheda and Cork can stick with the form they've shown the past few weeks and the two Northern teams stay in the rut they are in.
You can get the latest scores on Flash Score - Soccer livescore - soccer live scores, results, live score and also on the bbc website id say.
