Ajax Amsterdam v Heerenveen: Preview

AMSTERDAM, March 3 (Eredivisie) - Ajax coach Henk ten Cate is expecting his side to have reclaimed second spot in the Eredivisie table following the visit of Heerenveen on Sunday.

The Amsterdam club were pushed out of the top two by FC Twente on Friday following their 3-0 win at NEC Nijmegen, and could be 10 points adrift of PSV Eindhoven heading into Sunday's encounter if the leaders can see off RKC Waalwijk.

However, Ajax have not lost in eight league matches, and Ten Cate sees no reason why his team can't extend that run against Heerenveen at the Amsterdam ArenA.

``It's obvious we will need to win this on our own patch,'' Ten Cate said.

``Heerenveen are a very good side, but we played very well in Heerenveen and I expect the same on Sunday.''

Kenneth Vermeer (broken finger) and Thomas Vermaelen (knee) remain sidelined for the hosts, while Roger is doubtful because of an ankle problem.

However, Ten Cate will welcome back Jaap Stam, George Ogararu and Ryan Babel from injury.

Eighth-placed Heerenveen have struggled in the absence of injured striker Afonso Alves and travel to Amsterdam on the back of successive defeats, including a 1-0 loss to Roda JC last time out.

A place in the Champions League play-offs is now a distant dream for the club, but coach Gertjan Verbeek still believes his team can rescue something from a disappointing season by claiming a berth in the UEFA Cup instead.

``It is going to be exciting for us in the eight matches that remain this season, but I think we have the quality to finish between sixth and ninth place,'' Verbeek said.

``Last season we managed to qualify for European football after the UEFA Cup play-offs. This year we have to do it the same way again.''

Top scorer Alves has returned to training following knee problems but is not set to play at Ajax, while Andre Hanssen (knee) and Bo Storm (groin) are also absent.

Ugur Yildirim faces a late fitness test on a muscle injury but Calvin Jong-A-Pin is fit again.
